In order to keep the collections accessible, the library wanted to preserve and digitise the collection of Herbert Baker’s renowned architectural drawings<\/a><\/span>, which includes some 11,000 original maps and drawings.<\/p>\n The documents have been seriously damaged over time and need to be extensively prepared for digitisation to ensure their durability and optimal digitisation quality.<\/p>\n \u2192 The combination of several areas of expertise is required: MEMORIST<\/a><\/span> offers the services of its French experts from La Reliure<\/a><\/span> and Arkh\u00eanum<\/a><\/span> to carry out this task.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”05638010-77cf-486f-a2d7-830936571c70″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb image=”https:\/\/staging.thememorist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Picture3.png” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” background_enable_image=”off” min_height=”500px” animation=”off” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]<\/p>\n Success depends on the ability to master two aspects:<\/strong> the rapid and effective training of local teams and the provision of rigorous logistical support for the material (Japanese paper, cultural heritage scanners, adhesives, etc.) The team therefore set up an on-site workshop with archivists, conservators and cultural heritage digitisation professionals who worked together on training but not on implementation. This required setting up a conservation workshop with 4 people who were completely inexperienced and trained in exceptional skills, and a digitisation workshop with 3 people and 3 different scanners to cover all formats encountered (A4 to A00).\u00a0<\/p>\n For the digitisation workshop: Each type of document was digitised on a scanner adapted to its specificities (format, texture, …) with a high level of quality for a 1:1 scale reproduction with particular attention to the colours (watercolour plans). In addition, the input of descriptive metadata has made it easy to find the digital documents in the databases.\u00a0<\/p>\n For the restoration workshop, the goal was twofold<\/strong>. On the one hand, the image quality<\/strong> was to be improved (digitisation of all information) and on the other hand, the damage caused by improper handling was to be minimised<\/strong>. L\u2019\u00e9quipe a alors d\u00e9ploy\u00e9 un atelier in-situ avec des archivistes, des restaurateurs et des professionnels de la num\u00e9risation patrimoniale qui ont travaill\u00e9 de concert \u00e0 la formation et non \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation. Cela a demand\u00e9 de mettre sur place un atelier de restauration de 4 personnes, totalement novices, form\u00e9es \u00e0 des savoir-faire d\u2019exception et un atelier de num\u00e9risation de 3 personnes avec 3 scanners diff\u00e9rents pour couvrir tous les formats rencontr\u00e9s (A4 au A00).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Pour l\u2019atelier de num\u00e9risation\u00a0: Chaque type de document a \u00e9t\u00e9 num\u00e9ris\u00e9 sur un scanner adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 ses sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9s (format, texture,\u2026) avec un haut niveau de qualit\u00e9 pour une reproduction \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle 1 avec une attention particuli\u00e8re sur les couleurs (plans aquarell\u00e9s). De plus, l\u2019insertion de m\u00e9tadonn\u00e9es descriptives a permis de retrouver ais\u00e9ment les documents num\u00e9riques dans les bases de donn\u00e9es.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Pour l\u2019atelier de restauration\u00a0il y avait un double objectif.<\/strong> Premi\u00e8rement au niveau de la qualit\u00e9 de l'image <\/strong>(num\u00e9risation de toutes les informations) et deuxi\u00e8mement l\u2019att\u00e9nuation des dommages <\/strong>caus\u00e9s par une mauvaise manipulation.
