Historical significance of Fontevraud Abbey
Considered to be one of the greatest monastic towns inherited from the Middle Ages, Fontevraud was founded by the visionary monk Robert d’Arbrissel in the 12th century. Serving first as an abbey and then a necropolis, the buildings were turned into a prison during the French Revolution. Today, the entire site is open to the public and houses a museum of modern art as well as exhibitions with artists in residence.
Sustainable preservation efforts
The Abbey needed an exhaustive update of its building management plans. Under the supervision of architect Christophe Batard, the Art Graphique & Patrimoine team surveyed the entire site, including the Museum of Modern Art, offices, kitchens and the artists-in-residence buildings.
Advanced 3D survey technologies
Uniquely, the project combined various cutting-edge technologies, including lasergrammetry, terrestrial and aerial photogrammetry, as well as airborne LiDAR capture. This multi-dimensional approach allowed the AGP team to produce exceptionally accurate renderings – essential for the management and preservation of architectural heritage.
Quality outputs
Project deliverables includes building plans and detailed stone-by-stone sections, specially tailored to the needs of the architect, as well as highly accurate ortho-images and ortho-photos. With no fewer than 3,800 scan positions and 2.5 TB of raw data, this survey represents a technological feat and an unwavering commitment to heritage preservation.
